Katherine Papineau, Ph.D.

 KPapineau

Katherine Kaford Papineau recently received her PhD in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also completed her M.A. in 2008. Her research interests include the development of the modern home in post-war America, the history of domesticity, material culture, practices of everyday life, the interior, collecting, consumption and display. Before coming to UCSB, Katie earned her B.A. at Wellesley College in the fields of Architecture and French Cultural Studies, studied Architectural Design at MIT and studied Renaissance Architecture and Urban Planning in Florence with Syracuse University.

Katie’s dissertation, “Displaying Domesticity: Life in the Mid-twentieth Century Glass House,” examines the collection of glass houses built in Los Angeles that proliferated from 1940-1970. While these tempting jewel boxes are often discussed as modernist masterpieces that refused historical references, they prove instead to be quite closely aligned with housing trends of the mid-nineteenth century. The minimalist exterior of cutting-edge modernist design belies the interior that looked to traditional practices of domesticity in both arrangement and decoration. Her research has been funded by several grants and fellowships from the Graduate Dean’s Office at UCSB, as well as research fellow positions with the Subaltern-Popular Workshop, the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara, and as Editorial Assistant of the JSAH.

Katie spent the 2010-2011 academic year as a research fellow at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara researching and writing for the exhibition, Carefree California: Cliff May and the Romance of the Ranch House, part of the Getty-funded initiative “Pacific Standard Time: Art in Los Angeles 1945-1980.”
